Not on an EV tariff yet? Most UK suppliers now offer EV tariffs with around six cheap overnight hours at roughly 7โ€“9p/kWh โ€” a fraction of the ~26p capped rate. Schedule charging in the car (or let your supplier's smart charging handle it) so it falls inside the cheap window, and push your off-peak share towards 100%. A home battery can also store cheap overnight or solar energy for the evening peak โ€” see the Powerwall Payback tool.

On a time-of-use (TOU) or EV rate plan? Many utilities offer overnight rates far below the daytime price โ€” sometimes under $0.10/kWh. Schedule charging in the car to start after the off-peak window opens and push your off-peak share toward 100%. A home battery can also shift solar or cheap overnight energy into peak hours โ€” see the Powerwall Payback tool.

How this is calculated

Is Supercharging still cheaper than petrol?
Usually, but not by as much as home charging. At ยฃ0.52/kWh and 255 Wh/mi, Supercharging costs about 13p a mile โ€” roughly the same as a 47-mpg petrol car at 137p/L. Home charging on an EV tariff at 7.5p is closer to 2p a mile. Compare with the Petrol Savings tool.
Is Supercharging still cheaper than gas?
Usually, but not by as much as home charging. At $0.48/kWh and 255 Wh/mi, Supercharging costs about 12ยข a mile โ€” similar to a 26-mpg car at $3.15/gal. Home off-peak at $0.12 is closer to 3โ€“4ยข a mile. Compare with the Gas Savings tool.
What counts as "free" charging?
Workplace chargers, hotel or destination chargers, and any free-Supercharging credits you still have. We count the energy but not the cost.
Does charging at home all the time hurt the battery?
No โ€” slower AC charging is the gentlest kind. Frequent DC fast charging is fine for most owners but generates more heat. Use the charge limit your car recommends for daily driving.
