Every occupation gets six rubric sub-scores from 0 to 5. The two exposure scores are then computed from those sub-scores with the same formula for every job, so you can see exactly why a role lands where it does.
- Routine (R) β how much of the work follows repeatable steps. Raises both exposures.
- Physical share (P) β how much of the job is handling objects, materials or equipment rather than information. Gates which channel applies.
- Dexterity & unstructured settings (U) β fine-motor work in varied, unpredictable places (homes, sites, outdoors). Lowers robot exposure.
- Social / empathy (S) β trust, care, persuasion, face-to-face presence. Lowers both.
- Regulation & liability (L) β licensing, safety sign-off, legal accountability. Lowers both (it slows adoption even when tech is ready).
- Creativity & judgment (C) β novel problems, taste, strategy. Lowers both, AI a bit more.
Robot exposure = 100 Γ (P/5) Γ [0.30Β·R + 0.30Β·(5βU) + 0.15Β·(5βS) + 0.10Β·(5βL) + 0.15Β·(5βC)] / 5
AI exposure = 100 Γ (0.25 + 0.75Β·(5βP)/5) Γ [0.40Β·R + 0.20Β·(5βS) + 0.15Β·(5βL) + 0.25Β·(5βC)] / 5
Overall = higher score + ΒΌ Γ lower score (capped at 100)
Timeline window comes from the dominant channel and its score. Software AI is shipping now, so AI-led windows start earlier; general-purpose humanoid robots are still in early pilots as of late 2026, so robot-led windows start later and are wider.
Does a high score mean this job will disappear?
No. "Exposure" means a large share of today's tasks could plausibly be handled by machines. Historically, exposed jobs more often change shape β fewer people doing more supervision, exceptions and customer contact β than vanish outright. Demand, wages, regulation and cost all decide what actually happens.
Where do the sub-scores come from?
They are our own editorial judgments about a typical version of each role, informed by general descriptions of the work. Real jobs vary a lot: a hospital-based welder and a pipeline welder do very different work. Treat the map as a conversation starter and use the Automation Risk Quiz for your own role.
Why is Optimus relevant if I can't buy one?
Humanoid robots, including Tesla's Optimus, are not broadly sold to consumers or businesses as of late 2026, and their eventual price and abilities are uncertain. The physical score asks a forward-looking question: if capable, affordable humanoids and other robots arrive, which tasks are easiest for them? See the Optimus ROI tool for the economics.
How should I use the "adjacent roles" list?
They are nearby jobs in the same sector with a lower overall score β often roles that keep your domain knowledge but add judgment, licensing, people skills or hands-on variety. Pay can be higher or lower; check local postingsjob adverts and training costs before switching.
