Year by year
Ages counted from your purchase dateHow this is calculated
- Base curve: each model family has a typical share of its original pricelist price left at the end of years 1โ10 (for example, a Model Y keeps roughly 47% after 5 years on our UK curves). Between year-ends we interpolate; past year 10 we assume about 10% further loss per year.
- Mileage: values move about 0.3% for every 1,000 miles above or below a 12,000 mi/yr pace (capped at โ40% / +12%). Past odometer readings are spread evenly over the time you've owned it.
- Condition: Excellent +5%, Good ยฑ0, Fair โ8%, Rough โ18% โ applied to today's and future values.
- Market shock multiplies today's and every future value by the percentage you set. Past values show a typical history and aren't affected.
- $ยฃ per mile = value lost in that year รท miles driven in that year.
Why does a Tesla lose so much in year one?
Every new car takes its biggest hit early, and Teslas have an extra factor: Tesla changes new-car prices directly and often. When new prices drop, the used market re-prices almost overnight. That's what the market-shock slider is for.
Is this a trade-in or private-sale value?
Think of it as a typical retail-market value for a clean-title car. Dealer trade-in offers usually come in 8โ15% lower; a private sale can land closer to this figure. The Trade-In Estimator breaks those out.
Is this a part-exchange or private-sale value?
Think of it as a typical retail value for a clean car with no outstanding finance and no insurance write-off history. Part-exchange and online car-buying offers usually come in 8โ15% lower; a private sale can land closer to this figure. The Part-Exchange Estimator breaks those out.
Why have used EV values fallen faster in the UK?
Several things hit at once: Tesla's new-car price cuts, manufacturers discounting new EVs to meet the ZEV mandate, and a large wave of two- to four-year-old cars returning from company-car, salary-sacrifice and lease schemes (low Benefit-in-Kind tax made EVs very popular with fleets). Private buyers have also been wary of battery life and charging. Values have steadied since, but the UK curves here are lower than our US ones for that reason.
Does the battery affect resale value?
Yes. Buyers pay more for cars still under the 8-year battery warranty (100,000โ150,000 miles depending on model) and for packs with little degradation. Check yours with the Battery Health tool. These curves are estimates, not appraisals โ get real offers before you sell.
